Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised boxer Lovlina Borgohain for raising an objection after noticing a distorted map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow during the 2026 Commonwealth Games. PM Modi made the remarks while interacting with Indian athletes who returned from Scotland after the Commonwealth Games. Lovlina Borgohain, who won a silver medal in the women’s 75kg category, was asked by the Prime Minister about the incident.
“ Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi?” PM Modi asked her, referring to her interaction with the restaurant management. Lovlina Borgohain laughed and explained that she had been celebrating with the Indian boxing contingent when she noticed the incorrect depiction of the Indian map.
“It was a happy occasion sir, we were celebrating and I didn’t like to see the distorted flag. I politely told them and they have made the changes also,” the Assam boxer said.
PM Modi praised Lovlina Borgohain for raising the issue despite being in the middle of celebrations following her Commonwealth Games triumph.
“To be able to recognise the significance of that map at a time when you were celebrating and the Games were over, I can tell you truthfully, that video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time,” the Prime Minister said.
The incident took place when Lovlina Borgohain visited Mister Singh’s India restaurant in Glasgow with members of the Indian boxing contingent for a celebratory dinner. India had secured 10 medals in boxing at the Games.
Lovlina Borgohain noticed that the Northeast was missing from a depiction of the Indian map used by the restaurant. She subsequently raised the issue with the management, explaining that the omission was particularly hurtful to people from the Northeast.
“Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our North East is missing. Yes, even outside, the map that’s displayed has cut off the Northeast. As someone from the Northeast, that really hurts us,” she said while speaking to the restaurant management.
The restaurant later apologised for the incorrect depiction and said it would change its logo to feature the proper map of India. The Indian embassy in Glasgow also took notice of the controversy and raised the matter with the establishment.
