WASHINGTON, July 19 : The United States is deploying fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, as well as F-16 fighter jets, from Europe to the Middle East amid the escalation of the conflict with Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported.

F-16 fighter jets are being sent from Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany, while F-35 fighter jets are redeployed from Lakenheath Air Base in England, the newspaper said.

According to the publication, tanker aircraft are also being deployed to the region.

On the night of June 18, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum intended to end the conflict that began on February 28. However, since July 8, the US military has carried out several attacks on Iran. US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that this was in response to Iran's actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian military responded with strikes on US bases in several Middle Eastern countries. Tehran also accused Washington of violating the ceasefire memorandum. On July 9, US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire no longer in effect.
