DUBAI, July 19 : The United States has given Saudi Arabia preliminary permission to enrich uranium, and this agreement, in its current form, does not include measures to prevent the development of nuclear weapons, CNN reported citing documents and informed sources.
As the broadcaster explained, the draft agreement, which provides for US support for Saudi Arabia's peaceful nuclear programme, is still awaiting Trump's signature, although negotiations concluded in October 2025.
The channel notes that the so-called "123 Agreement" on US-Saudi nuclear cooperation is a framework agreement for the transfer of nuclear materials and technology to Riyadh from American companies or the US government. However, it has not yet been submitted to the US Congress for review.
Sources told the channel that the delay in approving the deal was due, in part, to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Congress sources also believe the delay may be due to the risk of US lawmakers blocking the deal.
