A university is not merely a place that awards degrees; it is an institution that creates knowledge,
nurtures innovation, and addresses society's most pressing challenges through research. Great
universities are remembered not for the number of graduates they produce but for the discoveries
they make, the technologies they develop, and the ideas they contribute to humanity.
Unfortunately, many private universities have drifted far from this noble mission. In their
relentless pursuit of admissions, rankings, and financial growth, they have become factories for
degrees while allowing meaningful research to fade into oblivion. If this trend continues, India
risks producing millions of degree holders but very few innovators, inventors, or thought leaders.
The rapid expansion of private higher education has undoubtedly increased access to universities
across the country. Many private institutions have invested in modern campuses, digital
classrooms, and student facilities. However, impressive buildings and glossy brochures cannot
compensate for the absence of a vibrant research culture. In many institutions, research is treated
as a compulsory formality rather than the foundation of academic excellence.
One of the biggest reasons for this decline is the lack of investment in research infrastructure.
Quality research demands well-equipped laboratories, advanced scientific instruments, digital
libraries, research databases, software, field studies, and financial support for conferences and
publications. Yet, many universities hesitate to spend adequately on these essentials because they
do not generate immediate financial returns. Instead, substantial resources are directed toward
marketing campaigns, campus expansion, and admission drives designed to maximize student
enrolment.
Faculty members are equally affected by this commercial mindset. Instead of being encouraged
to pursue research, many are burdened with excessive teaching loads, administrative
assignments, accreditation documentation, admissions, student counseling, and promotional
activities. In such an environment, research naturally becomes the first casualty. Even highly
capable academics find little time or institutional support to undertake original investigations that
require sustained effort and intellectual freedom.
Another disturbing trend is the obsession with numbers instead of quality. Faculty members are
often evaluated based on the quantity of publications rather than their originality or impact. This
pressure encourages superficial studies, repetitive topics, fragmented publications, and
submissions to low-quality journals simply to satisfy institutional targets. Research becomes a
mechanical exercise in producing papers instead of generating knowledge that advances science,
technology, business, economics, healthcare, agriculture, or public policy.
The situation is even more concerning for doctoral scholars. A PhD should train researchers to
think critically, solve complex problems, and contribute original knowledge to their discipline.
However, in many private universities, scholars struggle with inadequate funding, limited
laboratory facilities, restricted access to quality journals, and insufficient academic mentoring.
Some supervisors are responsible for too many scholars, reducing meaningful academic
interaction. Others are overwhelmed by administrative responsibilities that leave little time for
effective supervision. Consequently, many PhD candidates focus on fulfilling procedural
requirements rather than conducting rigorous, impactful research.
Research thrives only in an atmosphere of academic freedom, intellectual curiosity,
collaboration, and healthy debate. Unfortunately, many universities operate under rigid
administrative structures where innovation receives less attention than institutional compliance.
Faculty members may hesitate to pursue ambitious research projects because failure is
discouraged, experimentation is expensive, and long-term projects are often viewed as
financially unproductive. Such an environment discourages creativity and limits academic
ambition.
Equally worrying is the weak connection between university research and national development.
India's economy faces enormous challenges in agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, climate
change, renewable energy, financial inclusion, artificial intelligence, cyber security, public
administration, and sustainable development. Universities should be generating practical
solutions in these areas through interdisciplinary and industry-oriented research. Instead, much
of the research produced remains confined to library shelves and institutional repositories
without influencing policy, industry, or society. Research that neither solves problems nor
creates innovation represents a missed opportunity for national progress.
The commercialization of higher education has also changed institutional priorities. Success is
increasingly measured by admission numbers, fee collections, campus expansion, and placement
statistics. While financial sustainability is important, universities cannot be managed solely as
business enterprises. Education is a public good, and research is its most valuable contribution to
society. Institutions that prioritize revenue over scholarship gradually erode their academic
credibility and international reputation.
It is important, however, to recognize that not all private universities fit this description. Several
institutions have demonstrated that private ownership and research excellence can go hand in
hand. They have invested heavily in laboratories, faculty development, international
collaborations, innovation centres, incubation hubs, patents, and interdisciplinary research. These
universities prove that excellence is possible when visionary leadership places academic quality
above short-term financial gains. Their achievements should serve as models for the rest of the
sector.
The need for reform has never been greater. Private universities must significantly increase
investment in research infrastructure and create dedicated funding mechanisms for faculty and
doctoral scholars. Teaching workloads should be balanced to provide adequate time for research.
Performance evaluations should emphasize research quality, citations, patents, technology
transfer, and societal impact instead of merely counting publications. Strong ethical standards,
transparent doctoral supervision, and meaningful collaboration with industry, government, and
international institutions must become integral to university culture.
Regulatory bodies also have a crucial role to play. Accreditation and ranking frameworks should
reward genuine research excellence, innovation, patents, start-ups, policy contributions, and
community impact rather than simply measuring infrastructure or publication volume. Incentives
should encourage universities to undertake research that addresses national priorities and
contributes directly to economic and social development.
India aspires to become a global knowledge economy and a leader in innovation. Such ambitions
cannot be fulfilled by institutions that primarily manufacture degrees while neglecting research.
Universities exist to expand the boundaries of knowledge, challenge conventional thinking, and
prepare future generations to solve problems that do not yet have answers. Without strong
research, higher education becomes little more than a credentialing system.
Private universities stand today at a defining moment. They can continue operating as factories
for degrees, producing graduates in large numbers but contributing little to knowledge creation,
or they can embrace their true academic mission by investing in research, innovation, and
intellectual excellence. The choice they make will shape not only their own future but also
India's scientific, technological, and economic destiny. A nation that neglects research
compromises its competitiveness, while a nation that invests in research secures its future. The
time has come for private universities to stop counting degrees and start creating knowledge.
