KATHMANDU, Jun 24 : Authorities in Nepal have urged people in the Terai region to take precautions and protect themselves from the heatwave as the region is experiencing hotter days.
The Terai region has been experiencing hotter days over the past few days, and this will continue for the next 2-3 days, according to officials at the Meteorological Forecasting Division.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has urged the people of the region to take precautions and to protect themselves from the heatwave.
According to a spokesperson at the department, Bibhuti Pokharel, a heatwave might take place in the Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Provinces for the next three days.
She also urged people to adopt precautionary measures as there is a possibility of a rise in mercury in these provinces.
The temperature in the southern region of Lumbini and Sudur Paschim has crossed 38 degrees Celsius for the past few days, and in some places it might reach even 40 degrees, the official said.
The Department has forecast that the maximum temperature in Dhangadhi would reach 40 degrees Celsius, and in Nepalgunj and Bhairahawa, it would reach 41 degrees Celsius in the next three days.
Similarly, temperature in Birendranagar and Ghorahi would also increase, she added.
The department urged people in these areas to stay inside the house in the afternoon, except for essential work and to drink adequate water to protect from the heat.
The possibility of rain is still far away in the Southern and Western parts of the country.
Although Monsoon has entered central and eastern Nepal, it has been very weak, she added.
Monsoon is not likely to arrive in the Sudur Paschim and the southern parts of Lumbini for the next few days, she informed.
In Nepal, pre-monsoon showers usually start from the end of February and continue till May. This year, large parts of the country, especially the hills, received pre-monsoon showers. (PTI)
