Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni landed in Islamabad on Monday evening on an official visit, leading a high-powered delegation that includes senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders, as Tehran intensifies diplomatic outreach amid its rapidly escalating conflict with the United States.
CNN-News18 has learnt that the Iranian delegation is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir during the visit. Sources said discussions will focus on the deteriorating security situation in West Asia, border coordination, bilateral cooperation and the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries.
The visit comes at a critical juncture, with the United States and Iran exchanging fresh strikes across the Gulf and fears mounting that the conflict could spiral into a wider regional war.
Sources said Momeni’s visit follows an official invitation from his Pakistani counterpart and is expected to culminate in discussions on strengthening security cooperation, regional stability and existing memoranda of understanding between the two neighbours.
The high-level engagement also coincides with renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. According to Reuters, mediators have conveyed a proposal to Tehran that envisages a 10-day ceasefire to create space for reviving the interim agreement reached between Iran and the United States last month. Tehran is understood to be examining the proposal even as hostilities continue.
The diplomatic outreach unfolded as the United States launched its ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iranian military infrastructure. According to the US Central Command, the attacks targeted command centres, air defence systems, missile and drone launch sites, maritime capabilities and communications networks.
Iran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting American allies in the Gulf. Bahrain activated missile warning sirens, while Kuwait said its air defence systems intercepted incoming Iranian projectiles. The escalation has heightened concerns over regional security and global energy supplies.
