PESHAWAR, Aug 4: At least three members of a nomadic family were killed and five others injured on Tuesday after a mortar shell landed on their tent in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said.
The incident occurred in the Ahmad Wam area of Sararogha tehsil, South Waziristan district, where a Kuchi (nomadic) family was living in temporary tents on rocky terrain.
The mortar shell struck one of the tents, triggering a powerful explosion that caused multiple casualties. Two women and a little girl were killed, while several others were injured, a police official said.
Residents immediately launched rescue efforts and retrieved the injured from the debris. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The injured included women and children, while the condition of some of the wounded was critical.
The incident spread panic in the area, while authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the mortar shell strike and its origin. (PTI)
